Food Forests

Food Deserts

Food deserts are geographic areas where residents have limited access to fresh affordable healthy food options. Our goal is to help affected communities transition from food deserts by implementing projects to create sustainable community food forests.

What is a food forest?

Food forests are low-maintenance, sustainable, plant-based food production and agroforestry system that incorporate fruit and nut trees, shrubs, herbs, vines and perennial vegetables.

Food forests are designed to mimic a natural forest, with similar "layers" of plants that serve different roles in the ecosystem . That design helps maximize the amount of food that can be grown in a certain area.
